The origin of the word hamstring come from the word hamstrung which means to have been held back.
Why then do some instructors feel the need to control? Why would anyone feel the need to be in such a class? Lack of knowledge, awareness, understanding of what yoga is.
You may also find the achievements and progression decrease as you learn to just be in the asana and it is here, as the effort decreases that you find the joy.

True Confessions of a Yoga Teacher

Today set an intention of faith. Faith as we trust the limits as well as the abilities of our bodies.

Today set an intention of faith. Faith as we trust the limits as well as the abilities of our bodies.
Today I am looking at Asteya, the third of the Yamas.  Not stealing or grasping.  How might one be able to apply this to a yoga practice?  One steals due to a sense of lack.  Lack of not just wanted material possessions but lack of perceived ability.  A lack of believing we can create what we need. Lack of Self worth.  I know this one well and like many have struggled with it off and on my whole life.  Fresh in my mind are the many times I allowed the little voices in my head to possible opportunities, "you cannot do this, you are not enough.  What ever are you thinking"   I was never one to manifest, always a dreamer.  I talked myself into defeat before I ever gave myself an opportunity for success. Always giving up and walking away. My dad has an interesting way of looking at all of my attempts and failures to fully manifest.  He said, "some people spend their whole life climbing up one mountain only to reach the very top and decide, Oops this is the wrong mountain.  You however get half way up the mountain and decide, oops this is the wrong mountain"  I love that perspective. We all have missed opportunities and it is pointless to sit back and go over all the what ifs and if only. What is important is moving forward and breaking the pattern of stealing from self and others out of fear or sense of not being enough.  It is a life lived based in fear not based in faith.Today set an intention of faith.  Faith in the limits as well as the abilities of our bodies.  Don't hold back in asana for fear of falling, or fear of not being able.  Encourage yourself with in the safe boundaries of compassion, yet dare to take yourself where you have not been.
Reach out and explore each asana to your fullest potential.  Notice if you feel fear creaping in and ask yourself what are you afraid of.  Don't be afraid to encourage yourself in your practice, maybe even today allow yourself to explore a little bit more as you test the boundaries of your limits.  If it is too much, drop back.  My hope for you today is to realize your fullest potential today and every day.Open your eyes to a world of opportunities as you safely reach beyond what you ever thought possible.  I often find that inversions and back bends can be intimidating but also hold with them the power to unlock some of our self limiting behaviors and ideas about ourself and our world.  If you do not have a practice that includes back bends and inversions, I encourage you to begin to explore these amazing postures.Open your heart and see your world from a whole new perspective, as you allow yourself to be strongly grounded and rooted in the faith of your potential.  Humsopen, free, extend, flow, allow, trust, believe, compassion, passion, amaze, encourage, grace, ease, flexible, surrender, grounded, rooted, planted, firm, bold, confidently, reach, exploreThe Yamas, the foundation of your yoga practice and the first of the 8 limbs of yoga. There are 5.
  1. Ahimsa
  2. Satya
  3. Asteya
  4. Brahmacharya
  5. Apiragraha
They are also referred to as the ethical disciplines in the performance of asana, according to Iyengar in his book the tree of yoga.  He likens the Yamas to the roots of a tree, and from here the rest of the practice will flourish and grow.
