The origin of the word hamstring come from the word hamstrung which means to have been held back.
Why then do some instructors feel the need to control? Why would anyone feel the need to be in such a class? Lack of knowledge, awareness, understanding of what yoga is.
You may also find the achievements and progression decrease as you learn to just be in the asana and it is here, as the effort decreases that you find the joy.

True Confessions of a Yoga Teacher

Slow down and reclaim your body

Today I want to invite you to be honest with yourself both on the mat and off.  Be honest about what works for you and what does not work for you.  Choose a life, a practice, that is meaningful, not just familiar or popular or what your neighbor is doing.  I encourage you to Slow down, reenter and reclaim the space that is your body.  Remember, the body does not lie.  It is the mind that lies to not just ourselves but to each other, Wake up to the truth that is our potential.

The body is so much more then we give it credit for.  It is a living breathing energy machine that is constantly processing and deciphering energy/information that is either going to create ease or disease.  It is a shell, our shell, here to contain us until we are finished with it on earth.  We need to let the body lead us and as the energy is allowed to move thru the body, the body begins to heals and we can begin to stop struggling for change and allow a natural change to occur.

Most of us have trained ourselves to look outside of our self, to others, for guidance and direction, in the hopes that someone out there somewhere has the answer.  We tell our friends, our family, post things on facebook and then wait for the  thumbs up or the answers we want. Dismissing those that we wish not to hear.  No one knowing the whole story (and be honest, there is your version, their version and then there is the truth) yet hoping that this may somehow make everything ok.

If we truly wish to find change in our lives we must first accept and embrace what we have created, claim it, take responsibility for our actions and then allow the change to come so that we are then able to fulfill and be all that we are to be.  In reality we cannot give away anything that is not ours, that we do not own, and that includes misery, sadness, frustration etc………  Once you are able to claim it, take responsibility for it then it is yours to let go of.  It is here that you can begin to create anew

As we begin the process of changing what we do, this change will also transfer over into who we are.  How can it not.  As you Find within you the courage and the willingness to wake up, live every day aware and mindful you begin to awaken to all that is possible.  This is not going to happen by speeding up and going faster.  All that does is take you further and further away from your own experience with in your body.  Often it is easier to silence the thought, hoping to avoid the reality falling back into familiar patterns.  But the body knows and the body will respond.

As you move onto your mat today I encourage you to consider a new approach, a new attitude.  Remember, the way you do anything is the way you do everything.  Take it slow, move with purpose, finding the balance between ease and effort and then let go of any resistance and just be present.  Grounded, as Katut said, “as if you have 4 legs”
Explore a new way of entering or holding an asana, being mindful and moving slow and with intent.  What is the message from the body?  What is your breath doing?  If you find you are holding the breath or not able to breath a full deep breath, back out of the asana, find the ease and effortlessness of being in Zenasana.

As you leave the mat today you might try a new approach to a problem that has been heavy on your heart.  Look at yourself in relation to the problem in the hopes that a new understanding may enlighten you, giving you the opportunity to see and be you in a little different and maybe more productive way.  As you open and allow the self to be willing you may also be surprised to find that the ability to be more productive suddenly is there.

See you, on the mat!
